Edwards / Johnson – Biggest Loser Showdown – Week 3 of 6 Results
I know you are anxiously awaiting these results every week! The competition is still very stiff with lots of obstacles standing in each of the contestants way. Some of us have traveled and eaten rich food. Some of us have had an extra beer or two on the weekends. Well, what good is a diet if you can’t live it up at least a little bit? I think that the good news of all this is that we are all on a downward trend. We did have two people drop out (actually, not even start) and I will continue to “remind” them about that on this set of blog entries until they start up or at least comment that they quit too early! Apparently, they were “busy”. I know my life has been very easy with zero stress so I can understand.
As a reminder, we track two things – who lost the greatest percentage for the week and who has lost the greatest percentage of weight since the beginning.
This past week’s biggest loser was Deanna, having lost 0.47% of herself since the beginning. This was the second of three weeks were everybody went in the right direction (down).
Here are the total competition standings as of last Sunday – April 25th:
Competition is stiff and there could be a big swing any week! How exciting is this? I bet it is as good as the TV show so stay tuned!

Flower – by thatgamecompany

Why would you want to play a game on the ps3 where you fly flower petals through a field? Well, that was the same question that I asked myself before I logged on the PlayStation Network and downloaded Flower by thatgamecompany. Being skeptical, I downloaded the movie to see Kelli Santiago, President of thatgamecompany, talking about Flower as an attempt to pull emotion from the player. Normally, that would have been strike 2 for me – flowers and then emotions. Then, I watched the video and saw it was a game with really great visuals and was onl going to cost me $10. Ok, I am in for $10 – I’ll support an indie game maker for that.
Now, I am 9% of the way into the game per the PS3 trophy I just won and I have decided that it is blog-worthy. The game starts with a single flower petal in a very dreary apartment which is perhaps in Beijing. It might not be Beijing but from my visit there, the view out of the window looks alot like it with the cranes and smog. As you navigate to the single flower with the very simple SIXAXIS control, your eyes appear to shut and then open to a wide open, sunny, green field. Again, you are flying a single flower petal in this open field.
As you move about the field, everything you touch seems to come to life and the chain of petals flying behind you grows as you touch each flower. While the vibrant colors are beautiful on an HD TV, there is nothing at all conventional about this game from what I can tell so far – there is no score, no lives, no death. It is unusual and I wonder if the general public will take to it. At a minimum, I hope everyone at least tries it.

Feed the Animals – Girl Talk
First off – special thanks to @bb42 and @sranderson for turning me on to this album – Feed the Animals
by Girl Talk. Feed the Animals is the work of Gregg Gillis and is made entirely of sampling with a little bit of composition. In the first couple of minutes, you’ll be introduced to never heard before mixes such as Twisted Sister’s We’re Not Gonna Take IT and Unk’s Walk It Out. Where did that come from? I don’t know but it doesnt stop there. The album which was originally composed as one longfile was chopped into 14 different songs which are more like groupings of samples than actual songs.
Some of my more favorite samples include the almost oversampled measures from Bob James’ Take Me to the Mardi Gras. Most of you will recognize that as the bells from Run DMC’s Peter Piper; the mix in the tenth song – “In Step” – of Salt-n-Pepa (“Push It”), Dee-Lite (“Groove is in the Heart”), and Nirvana (“Lithium”); and the “What It’s All About” mix of The Police, Busta Rhymes, and Phil Collins only to bring in Faith No More and Boogie Down Productions. All of them are very cool and I counted over 100 different bands / songs, so you’ll definitely find something that you remember.
The kicker is that while I like all of the music, I dont know when I would listen to it except on my iPod by myself or in my car. You can find them on myspace or at their website. If nothing else and for a brief stint, somehow they made Wilson Pickett, Avril Lavigne, and Rod Stewart sound cool.

Holiday Cranberry Cocktail Punch
This past holiday season (2008), we had quite a problem coming up with a punch to serve our guests at a holiday party. The good part about the search is that we sampled several. The downside is that we almost didn’t have a punch to serve because we didn’t conjure this one until the very last minute. In the end, we received glowing reviews for it and so we wanted to share it with everyone. We call it Holiday Cranberry Cocktail Punch and to be fair it is a modified Cosmopolitan:
- 10 oz Absolut Vodka
- 5 oz Triple Sec
- 5 oz Rose’s Lime Juice
- 1.5 L Cranberry Canada Dry Ginger Ale
- 1.5 L Cranberry Cocktail
For presentation we served this in a punch bowl that contained clementine slices and cranberries frozen in miniature bundt cake pans.
We offered this punch, wines, beers, and liquor drinks to our guests. This was the clear winner and we ended up making a total of 4 bowls of this for about 30 people over the course of 3.5 hours.
