At 8am today we started on our surprise trip to Disney near Orlando, Florida! The kids have been the best they could be for such a long drive. Jill has been the best driver and she has driven the whole way! I am so glad she did.

The kids were surprised when they got into the car and saw their big, stuffed Mickey and Minnie Mouse heads sitting in their car seats. We are almost there and can’t wait to get to the Animal Kingdom Lodge to stretch out!!

Our kids love little science experiments. Most recently, we built an air pressure propelled matchbox car. It was super simple to build and our seven year old son knew exactly how to build it.

First, I grabbed a few spare parts that we had around the house … A matchbox car, a balloon, a couple of straws and three rubber bands. We had several types of straws and we ended up going with a bendy straw so we could angle the “motor” properly. The cool moment for me was when I put the items randomly on the floor and our seven year knew exactly what and how we were going to make it. He gave explicit instructions and then explained how air pressure moves from high to low areas in order to reach equilibrium and that the net result would be that the wind from the balloon would push the car across the floor.

The science isn’t difficult at all and neither is the construction. Here it is in action… Post a link to yours if you make one too!!

My son has a new favorite song he is running around the house and singing. He loves “Sweep” from the Cat In The Hat. Here are the lyrics:

Sweep

Sweep,
Sweep up the memories
those old untidy memories
broken mixed up memories
of what we had one day

Sweep,
Sweep out the nonsense
That crazy happy nonsense
This world’s too old for nonsense
Sweep, just sweep it all away

Everything in a state of grace
Everything back in it’s proper place
No more rainbows for us to chase
No more games to play

Sweep,
Sweep out the laughter
There’s no more time for laughter
At least not until after
I come back – and you know

I
just
may.

     – Dr. Seuss, “The Cat in the Hat”

I hope you enjoy it.

At one point in my career, I had a senior manager give me feedback that I was relentless. I took it as a compliment and I believe it was meant to be one. In one publication, Larry Bossidy had this to say about his transformation of AlliedSignal – “Many people regard execution as detail work that’s beneath the dignity of a business leader. That’s wrong … it’s a leader’s most important job.” Well, if it is my most important job, shouldn’t I be involved in everything my team is doing? This includes resolving problems, removing obstacles, coaching and paying attention to all the details especially the financials.

It seems to be working and it makes my role in transformation more fun.
