Royal Science of Chemistry Weighs In On Best Hangover Cure

OK, so for fun, I was searching on the Internet to validate my theory that Vitamin B, Dr. Pepper, and a Quarter Pounder with Cheese was the best hangover rememdy. Really, I just wanted to convince myself that there was some value whatsoever to eating all that garbage in one sitting. :) I still cannot validate that theory.

I did find that the Royal Society of Chemistry has said that Toast with Honey is the best cure for afterwards and a glass of milk prior to your partying effort. That sure does seem much healthier than my suggestion over the years. Oh well!

#60for60

Two days ago over beers, I asked someone, “Hey, are you doing #60for60?” One person at the table gave me a thumbs up and another asked what it was. My response, “Well, it’s a challenge to do drink more water on twitter.” I almost chuckled when I was quickly asked what Twitter was. This conversation was turning interesting because I am always surprised when one of my friends is not on “the Twitter”.

At the beginning of the month, I started a health challenge started by the No Fizz CLT non-profit. The challenge started as drink 60% of your weight in ounces of water. That was a lot of water so the group cut back and asked for 60oz of water for 60 days. Via Twitter and word of mouth, @bodemuro and @NoFizzCLT asked followers and friends to take the challenge. I joined and even started a few weeks early in August.

The challenge has been great so far. For the first two weeks, I found that my body was not absorbing the water very much but now, I find that I eat less, I drink less coffee, and I have more energy. Is it because of the increased water? I don’t know but I do know that there appears to be a correlation. Jill is doing the challenge too but she always drinks a lot of water so it is easier for her. I found that I forgot to drink the water so I downloaded an app Water Your Body to force myself to keep track. It’s a very simple app and it helped me break into drinking water.

So, I’m almost a month into the challenge and I give it a thumbs up. Feel free to follow @NoFizzCLT to get more info.

Edwards / Johnson Biggest Loser Showdown – Week 2 of 6 Results

The competition is getting is tough! Everyone is dedicated to making the 12 pound overall loss goal. The toughest part right now is continuing the diet through “tough times” like Jill and her mom going to Atlanta and eating anything in sight. Another tough thing to go through is doing a work site visit where there is a lot of rich food available.

These results are actually from this past Sunday the 18th of April. The next results will be posted tomorrow and will be for the current week.

This week’s biggest loser was me – Dana – and I lost 2.11%. Unfortunately, Deanna and Jill gained small amounts.

Here are the current total competition rankings as a percent of total weight:
1. Dana 95.95%
2. Deanna 96.93%
3. Jill 97.36%

Good luck to everyone following along and to my fellow competitors!

Edwards / Johnson Biggest Loser Showdown – Week 1 Results

Our results are in for the Edwards / Johnson Biggest Loser Showdown. We had two folks join who weren’t Edwards’ or Johnsons so if they submit their % weight loss, we’ll have to change the name of the Showdown. Until then, we’ll just keep going with the same name.

I’m really proud of everyone so far. Jill and Deanna did great and completed the physical challenge of working out 4 days this past week. I did not make the challenge so I hope they don’t vote me off the Island! :)

Here are the results shown in % of original weight on 4/4/2010:

  1. Deanna      95.9%
  2. Jill               96.6%
  3. Dana           98.0%

I guess this week that I will have to lay off the beer and cheesesteaks. Here I come! :)

Edwards / Johnson Biggest Loser Showdown – Week 1 of 6

So the family and I were driving back from Easter, having eaten probably 25 pieces of cake, when Jill and I decide to drop some weight. Our friend, Paul, told us about his work doing a Biggest Loser Challenge and after some discussion we decided to do the same thing. Jill’s mom was in the back and she signed up too. To start, we each put $10 prize money into the pot. Each week, we’ll have a challenge and a weigh-in. The two that lose the least in % will add $5.00 to prize pool!

So we are all at starting weight so the standings should be obvious: :)
Dana 100%
Deanna 100%
Jill 100%

Wish us all luck and remember that anyone can join us if you’re interested!

Where did all the Egg Nog go?

I was in the kitchen to see this and then hear someone ask “Where did all the egg nog go?”

Oh, Christmas Tree!

I’m pretty late with this update – oh well. The family had a blast hanging ornaments on our tree. Jill had to go buy extra lights before we could start because the tree is about a foot taller than we normally get – 9ft this year. Mom and I enjoyed egg nog as usual. Anyways, here are the tree pictures and thanks for reading.

Frogmore Stew

Last night, I posted on twitter that we were making frogmore stew and I was surprised at how many dm’s I received asking either what it was or how to make it.  I think it is super simple and I haven’t met anyone who didn’t like it.

The ingredients are simple and scalable:

  • 12 c. water
  • 1/4 c. Old Bay Seasoning – add more if you really like the taste
  • 1 lb baby red potatoes
  • 1 lb sausage
  • 6 ears of corn
  • 2 lb shrimp

First, bring the water and the Old Bay to a boil. While that is coming to a boil, quarter the new potatoes, slice the sausge into 1 inch pieces, shuck the corn, and break the corn into halves.  Once the water is boiling, add the potatoes to the boil and cook for 15 minutes.  Next add the sausage and boil for 5 minutes.  After the sausage, add the corn and boil for 5 minutes.  Finally, add the shrimp and boil for 5 minutes or until they turn orange / pink. Drain and serve. Note that if you dont want to read this paragraph, the ingredients are in order of the directions.

This goes really well with a beer like Natural Light or Firefly vodka. Hope you enjoy it.

Holiday Cranberry Cocktail Punch

This past holiday season (2008), we had quite a problem coming up with a punch to serve our guests at a holiday party.  The good part about the search is that we sampled several.  The downside is that we almost didn’t have a punch to serve because we didn’t conjure this one until the very last minute.  In the end, we received glowing reviews for it and so we wanted to share it with everyone.  We call it Holiday Cranberry Cocktail Punch and to be fair it is a modified Cosmopolitan:

  • 10 oz Absolut Vodka
  • 5 oz  Triple Sec
  • 5 oz Rose’s Lime Juice
  • 1.5 L Cranberry Canada Dry Ginger Ale
  • 1.5 L Cranberry Cocktail

For presentation we served this in a punch bowl that contained clementine slices and cranberries frozen in miniature bundt cake pans.

We offered this punch, wines, beers, and liquor drinks to our guests.  This was the clear winner and we ended up making a total of 4 bowls of this for about 30 people over the course of 3.5 hours.
