101 F at Crowder’s Mountain

Well, it may have been 101 today in the Charlotte area but at least we decided to go hiking with the kids on Crowder’s Mountain during the afternoon during the hottest time of the day. Getting out of the car at about 2pm, Jill and I agreed that we would hike about 30 minutes and then come back. That seems to be about the magic time when the kids lose interest and need snacks. For our hike along Pinnacle Trail, the benches were spread out just enough to give us time to rest for a few minutes and then start back at it. The hike was rated “strenuous” and I agree. All said and done we hike to the top and back in about 3 hours including the little pit stops along the way as well as a 10 minute break at the top. Our hike back was along Turnback Trail and it was significantly less strenuous.

Afterwards we made a stop at Tony’s in Gastonia for a chili dog, onion rings and homemade ice cream. Jill loves the lemon ice cream as seen in the photo. :)

Bear and Her Painted Turtle

Mom, Buddy and Bear found a painted turtle on the way to the bus stop this morning. Bear loved it as you can see from the photo. It looks like mom’s love of animals and nature is rubbing off on them!

Buddy & Bear – Our Soon to Be Ninjas! :)

Buddy and Bear decided they wanted to try “Karate”. I think it was because of a SpongeBob cartoon. Either way, I am happy that they are excited about the same sport. The great news is that my old teacher, Mr. Martin, opened a new shop and is taking them into his classes. I am including a short video of Buddy’s first crescent kicks which were actually pretty good. Of course, he immediately forgot how to do them by the end of the class. :) I’ll work with him on that.

How To Train a Dragon

The kids and I went to see How To Train A Dragon 3D yesterday and loved it! My son left the movie and was asking me if we could buy it. My daughter left the movie begging to go to McDonalds to get a happy meal and another dragon toy.

The kids had very different experiences at the movies. The girl who is 3 was very confused at the beginning of the movie during the raid scene. She was under the impression that all dragons are good. I couldn’t see her face but I think she may have even wanted to leave. Towards the end of the movie, she was very excited that you could train a dragon and it would be good. There may have been a point at the beginning where she was even scared. Again, it was hard to tell because it was dark. Her favorite dragon was Toothless because “he is the nice one.”

My son who was six was enthralled by the movie the whole time. I think he was mentally cataloging all of the different types of dragons. His favorite was the two-headed dragon.

For me, I thought it was very entertaining and wouldn’t mind seeing it again. The 3D was just so-so and the story was fun.

Afternoon at the Park

Our bike ride today was pretty fun. Midway through the ride, we stopped at the neighborhood park to play. It was a beautiful day and the park was crowded with people. The kids played while mom and dad enjoyed the sun on the park bench.

Towards the end of the ride, we found sea oats and eventually brought them home after a short “sword fight” with a neighbor kid.
